Year 9 students have recently attended the annual Careers Speed Dating event at Oathall where they had the opportunity to speak to business and trade.
How to create the most intense network situation imaginable? Take a team of conservation veterans, unleash 30 students on them and make sure to limit their time for small-talks. How does it work? Actually quite similar to the romantic approach. Take at least 10 groups of students and one expert. Give them some space, but limit the privacy to 5 minutes.
Then, mercilessly ring a bell — better a proper gong — and make sure the students move on to the next conservation expert on the next table. While the first gong comes as a surprise, everybody will gear up immediately after. Just minutes into the game, all are up to speed and talking. For the students it was a unique opportunity to ask the experts about their conservation career, the most challenging aspects of their job and how is it like to work in remote places.
It was very encouraging to know that it was also hard for them when they started out their career. One advice I learned was to plan carefully how much you want to dedicate to conservation and where you want to see yourself in five years.

Speed dating is a formalized matchmaking process which has the purpose of encouraging eligible singles to meet large numbers of new potential partners in a very short period of time. The earliest documented example of speed dating was by Aryeh Alan and Rena Hirsch of Los Angeles in early who developed speed dating as a solution to the problem of typical single events where “only attractive women and outgoing men have success at the end of the evening”. Riffing on a speed dating theme, students took their places around the office and employers were given 10 minutes with each of them, allowing the latter an opportunity to better understand the career ambitions of the Cohort. The scientists have a patent pending for the technology. The new PIMS system has halved the time it takes to date carbon-containing material from anywhere in the world, and is much simpler: the SUERC scientists have gone from working with a system the size of a large bus, to one the size of a small family car. Carbon dating is used to determine the age of materials and artefacts with a biological origin – plants, fossils, bones, shells, soil and much more – up to around 50, years old.
It works by measuring residual concentrations of carbon – 14, a radioactive isotope, in the material.

The ovens will be fired up, the tanks brimmed with fresh chilled beer, the coffee machines heated and the staff raring to go.
