Selfies may be the rage but you can’t beat a hand written postcard home. An employee made redundant after the closure of Britain’s oldest postcard publisher is set to go it alone making beautiful postcards of Devon and Cornwall. Steve Johnson, who has set up Studio 27 at Crackington Haven in Cornwall to produce his own range of postcards, calendars and greeting cards, said there will never be the death of the postcard.
Mr Johnson worked as a sales rep for Cornwall and Devon at J. Salmon, the Kent-based family-run publisher for 13 years until it printed the last of its traditional postcards – and calendars – in December. It blamed shrinking markets and the huge increase in the popularity of social media for a dramatic decline in traditional holiday postcard sales in recent years. Taking photographs on phones is becoming ever more popular but this is where we have to step up our game by offering more artistic images, creating a newer, more modern look rather than the traditional holiday snaps.
Now, Mr Johnson, who used to cover Cornwall and Devon for the publisher has joined with his wife in his latest venture. She has ran her own souvenir business for the last five years, selling local view products such as fridge magnets, mugs and keyrings. By Hannah Finch.
